“Medicine at a glance” The whole of medicine, condensed into one simple textbook, only requiring the occasional bit of browsing by the user; sounds like a great idea doesn’t it?
Unfortunately, as most of us have now realised, medicine isn’t that easy, there’s a lot to learn and there’s no way you’re going to do that without putting at least a bit of work in.
So is this book a waste of space? In a word, no. While you’ll certainly need a more extensive library of books to get you through five years of MB ChB, this text offers concise summaries of the key topics across the medical specialties. The layout of the book is clear and easy to understand. Typically each subject is dealt with over two pages, with a large amount of the layout left to diagrams. As with several of the At A Glance titles, the latest editions are illustrated in colour, which brings the useful mind map/brainstorm style pictures to life. This book would make a great set of revision notes for finals and is certainly worth having on the shelf in the other years so you can flick through the pages on whichever specialty you are next studying and get the gist of it before you start. Having spoken to fifth year medical students, this publication has been well received by the students.
