The hormone pill is free from a GP or GUM clinic or can be bought from chemists if you don't want to see a doctor. The sooner you take the pill after intercourse, the better it works. It works best in the first 24hrs.

Emergency Contraception:

Emergency contraception is for when you have had unprotected sex or a contraceptive fails (e.g. condom splitting) and you don't want to get pregnant. It is NOT FOR REGULAR CONTRACEPTION
There are two types of emergency contraception:
1. A hormone pill (the "morning after" pill)
2. A copper IUD

The coil must be fitted (by a doctor or nurse) within 5 days of the unprotected sex. It should stop an egg being fertilised and implanting

The pill will work 75% of the time if taken within 24 hours of sex
The coil will work 99% of the time
